CLARISSE ALFONSO //
ILLUSTRATOR & DESIGNER
ABOUT THE ARTIST
Clarisse is a bachelor of Fine Arts graduate from the University of the Philippines-Baguio who often likes to create whimsical, soft pieces mixed with the mundane. She also hopes to make more meaningful art that pushes advocacies in the near future.

TRADITIONAL PAINTINGS
I enjoy depicting themes of femininity and nature and am constantly exploring new themes in my paintings as well. Below are paintings made using mostly oil and acrylic but some were also created using gouache and unique media such as embroidery.

"BODIES & STORIES"
(UNDERGRADUATE THESIS)
A series of life-sized portraits featuring real people and their stories and experiences with body positivity. Each piece was created on synthetic pinya organza cloth (typically used in the making of Barong Tagalog) with acrylic paint and embroidery.
Far more than what we physically see, its aim is to make the models and viewers challenge the way in which we think and view our bodies and the entirety of ourselves.
Endless thanks to my models, Professor Liza Ilagan and the rest of our teachers for guiding me throughout the process of creating these, my family, friends, and everyone who has been a part of this for making this possible.

MINI THESIS SERIES
This set of paintings was for my mini thesis, and to create these I approached people to ask them about what features made them self-conscious. Using the concept behind pagsusulsi or darning, I used thread in an attempt to 'fix' these features as we would use thread to hide or fix parts of clothing.

What these pieces aim to do, though, is to show that nothing needs fixing. These features tell stories about the person and they are beautiful the way they are. Which is why in the second panels, thread is used to embroider and instead highlight these parts that I believe we should be celebrating. Art has a way of making things that we feel are undesirable worth looking at and appreciating, and I hope that these pieces help people to embrace these parts and contribute to a culture of self-love.

This series greatly inspired me to pursue the same topic on a larger scale for my undergraduate thesis.
